L Tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid which plays an important role in thyroid hormone synthesis. Thyroxine (T4) is produced in the thyroid via iodination of tyrosine. Thus, theoretically, tyrosine insufficiency could undermine adequate thyroid hormone production. A low level of thyroxine (T4) and high thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels indicate an underactive thyroid.Supplementing with l-tyrosine may lead to a reduction in TSH.

Myo-inositol – Research has shown that myo-inositol supplementationreduces thyroid antibody and TSH levels, as well as improves symptoms associated with anxiety, mood swings, depression, and OCD. Research has also found that myo-inositol improves PCOS symptoms such as menstrual irregularities, acne, insulin resistance, and weight.

Manganese – The production of thyroid hormone requires manganese, along with other minerals.  As a result, a deficiency of manganese can potentially cause or contribute to a hypothyroid condition.

Vitamin A is required for activation of thyroid hormone receptors and insufficient vitamin A may depress thyroid function. Vitamin A insufficiency increases pituitary synthesis and secretion of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) increases the size of the thyroid gland and reduces uptake of iodine by the thyroid gland.

Selenium – The thyroid contains more selenium by weight than any other organ, and selenium is a necessary component of the enzymes that convert T4 into T3. Epidemiological research has shown that thyroid disorder prevalence is lower in areas with adequate selenium soil concentrations than in those with low concentrations. Selenium also helps protect the thyroid gland from oxidative stress. Thyroid cells generate hydrogen peroxide during production of thyroid hormone. Selenium protects the thyroid gland from the oxidative damage caused by these reactions. Moreover, without adequate selenium, high iodine levels can destroy thyroid gland cells.

Iodine – The function of the thyroid gland is to take iodine, found in foods, and convert it into thyroid hormones: thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). The thyroid gland needs iodine and the amino acid L-tyrosine to make T4 and T3. A diet deficient in iodine can limit how much T4 the thyroid gland can produce and lead to hypothyroidism. Without iodine you can’t make thyroid hormone and your thyroid stimulating hormone will increase indication low thyroid production.
