The Science of Fat Loss by Phil Richards, second edition: 5 Factors for Maximum Fat Loss and Muscle Gain

What you will learn

The five factors behind my approach

The book and workshops bring together five connected areas of fat loss. I will explain each factor in detail, from appetite and the release of stored fat to muscle building, sleep and recovery.

Factor 1

You must reduce appetite

The brain plays a central role in controlling our weight, so it is essential to understand the hormones that control our appetite. In factor 1, you will learn how to support these signals.

If you struggle to decrease appetite, losing weight can be much harder. This is where I will discuss the role of diet and peptides in helping to reduce appetite.

Factor 2

You must mobilise stored fat

There are several hormones and enzymes involved in signalling to our fat cells to release stored fat, so it can be transported to other tissues and burned as fuel in the mitochondria.

There are several things that can prevent lipolysis, or fat release. In this factor, you will learn what these are and how to support the signals involved in fat burning rather than fat storage.

Factor 3

You must burn the fat

Once fat has been released from the adipose (fat) tissue, it needs to be burned in the mitochondria. Unfortunately, many things can affect this process.

You will learn what you need to know about supporting mitochondrial function, so that released fat can be used as fuel rather than stored again as fat.

Factor 4

You must build more muscle

It is essential to focus on building more muscle whilst losing excess body fat for a whole host of reasons. These include supporting your metabolism, improving insulin sensitivity and blood sugar control, and helping to protect against age-related muscle loss, known as sarcopenia.

Building muscle, through a process known as muscle protein synthesis, is energetically expensive. Stored body fat can provide energy to help support this process while you are in a calorie deficit. Working towards building muscle while losing body fat is commonly known as body recomposition.

Factor 5

You must optimise your sleep & recovery

Inadequate sleep can undermine your results, making it harder to lose excess fat and maintain muscle. It is essential to know how to optimise your sleep, and you will learn how to approach this in this lesson.

I will also discuss the importance of recovery and the practices I consider as part of a wider approach, including sunshine exposure, red light therapy, saunas, ice baths and grounding, in the context of fat loss, muscle building, health and well-being.

What people say about the course

Diane SingletonFitness Instructor

“This course is a game changer for anyone wanting to improve their health, lose weight, especially reduce body fat.

I have a level 5 nutrition qualification and always found my knowledge was lacking, that is until now.

Thank you very much Phil Richards P this is such an amazing course for any fit pro.”

Carol WildgooseHolistic Therapist, Lincoln

“I have done a number of different courses in the health and fitness field over the last 20 years or so, but none like this. The course is incredibly comprehensive and detailed and provides references to a plethora of excellent studies. It’s not for the faint hearted as it is very in depth, but if you are in this field and really want to get to the nitty gritty then you will not be disappointed! Having started as gym owner and instructor a number of years ago, I now practice as a Holistic Therapist and the information within this course has been incredibly useful when dealing with my clients. Phil’s candid approach to delivering this course also makes it quite entertaining at times! Highly recommended for anyone who is in any way involved in health, wellbeing, and fitness.”

Matt MayesPersonal Trainer

“Phil’s fat loss course is without a doubt the most in depth course I’ve seen. If you take the time to really study the information he teaches you, you’ll have the ability to change your life or your clients lives.

It’s not only the science of fat loss, but also everything you need to know about optimising health and being able to thrive!”
